Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin were required to retake their oaths of office after an outdated version was administered during Friday's official swearing-in ceremony at Government House.
According to Antigua News Room, Mr. Browne addressed the matter on a radio programme Saturday, explaining that the oath originally administered contained wording tied to allegiance to the Crown rather than to the state — language that had not been updated in line with the Oaths Act 2025.
The revised legislation requires officeholders to swear allegiance to Antigua and Barbuda rather than to the monarchy. The error was identified following the conclusion of the ceremony.
Both the Prime Minister and the Attorney General subsequently participated in a corrected ceremony in which the proper oath was administered. Mr. Browne described the situation as an administrative oversight that was identified and resolved promptly.
The Prime Minister also moved to reassure the public, stating that the error does not affect the legitimacy of the government.
