The University of the West Indies (UWI) has established a dedicated research programme focused on development, sovereignty, and education in honour of Dr. the Honourable Ralph E. Gonsalves, the long-serving Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
According to Antigua News Room, the initiative was marked by a November 2025 reflection in which UWI Emeritus Professor and Jamaica Chapter Principal Director of Transparency International, Trevor Munroe, offered a striking tribute to the Caribbean statesman.
"Geniuses like Gonsalves come only once in a lifetime," Munroe said, describing the Prime Minister as a transformational figure whose contributions to the region have been far-reaching and enduring.
Munroe specifically highlighted Gonsalves' visionary support for higher education as a cornerstone of his legacy, underscoring why the UWI considered it fitting to name the research programme in his honour.
The programme is expected to explore themes central to Caribbean progress, including regional development, the assertion of sovereignty, and the expansion of educational access across the region — areas closely associated with Gonsalves' decades of political leadership.
The establishment of the programme represents a significant institutional recognition by one of the Caribbean's foremost academic bodies of the role political leadership can play in shaping educational and developmental outcomes across the region.
