A local attorney is urging authorities to modernise Antigua and Barbuda's Labour Code, warning that the 50-year-old legislation has failed workers for decades and is long overdue for reform.

According to Antigua Observer, attorney E. Ann Henry has called for an urgent overhaul of the nation's 1975 Labour Code, stating that the outdated law no longer meets the needs of the country and has not done so for more than 30 years.

Henry specifically highlighted that the ageing legislation has left workers vulnerable, including exposure to toxic buildings — a gap that underscores the breadth of protections the current Code fails to provide.

The call for reform draws attention to a long-standing concern among legal and labour advocates that Antigua and Barbuda's workplace regulations have not kept pace with modern standards, leaving employees without adequate legal recourse in a range of situations.
