The Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc. (MAAB) has issued a statement expressing profound sadness and solidarity following the devastating fire that gutted the Gambles Medical Centre in St. John's, displacing several medical practices and businesses.
According to Antigua.news, the blaze severely damaged the offices and infrastructure of six specialist physicians: Dr. Bernard Evan-Wong (Dentist), Dr. Hanybal Yazigi (Oncologist), Dr. Leon B. Stevens (Obstetrician and Gynaecologist), Dr. Sharon Cordner (Internist and Rheumatologist), Dr. Edda Hadeed (Paediatrician), and Dr. Asha Robins (Surgeon).
The MAAB described the destruction as far-reaching, noting that the affected doctors lost not only their physical workspaces but also critical medical equipment and years of patient records. The association called this a significant blow to the nation's broader healthcare landscape, extending well beyond personal loss.
"The dedication and compassion these doctors have shown to their patients is immeasurable," the MAAB stated, adding that seeing their livelihoods and capacity to provide care disrupted by such an unforeseen event was "truly heartbreaking."
The association also stressed the impact the disaster will have on the patients who depend on these specialists for ongoing care, urging members of the medical community, healthcare partners, and the wider public to extend empathy and support to the affected physicians and their staff.
"In the face of adversity, the medical community must remain united," the MAAB said. The association expressed confidence that, with collective support, the six doctors would overcome the setback and continue their work.
