Prime Minister Gaston Browne has condemned a shooting that occurred in the early hours of Sunday near a public concert organised by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, firmly stating that the violence was not politically motivated.
According to Antigua.news, Browne issued a statement Sunday referencing confirmation from the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda that the incident was unrelated to the political event and should not be interpreted through a partisan lens.
"What occurred was an act of criminal violence, rooted in illegal guns and ongoing disputes, which intruded upon a public gathering," the Prime Minister said.
Browne strongly denounced illegal firearms, gang activity, and violence in all forms, describing them as direct threats to public safety and national stability. He called for those responsible to be identified and brought before the courts.
The Prime Minister pointed to steps already taken by his administration to tackle gun crime, including strengthening legislation, increasing penalties for illegal firearm possession, and intensifying efforts to curb the importation and circulation of illegal weapons.
He also reaffirmed commitments outlined in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party's 2026 manifesto, which includes a zero-tolerance approach to murder, gang violence, and illegal firearms.
"There can be no excuse for criminal violence," Browne said, adding that such actions would be met with firm and decisive consequences.
The Prime Minister pledged continued collaboration between law enforcement and communities to combat crime and maintain peace across Antigua and Barbuda, describing public safety as a top government priority.
The shooting has raised concerns among residents, coming during a period of heightened political activity ahead of the April 30 general election. Authorities have continued to emphasise, however, that the incident bears no connection to the campaign event.
