Antiguan sprinter Tyra Fenton has claimed a bronze medal in the Girls Under-17 400 metres on the opening day of the 53rd Carifta Games in Grenada, securing the nation's first medal of the championships.

According to Antigua News Room, Fenton — the defending champion in the event — crossed the finish line in 52.62 seconds, narrowly missing out on a repeat title.

Jamaica's Shameika McLean took the gold medal with a winning time of 52.47 seconds. Last year's runner-up, Keyezra Thomas of The Bahamas, again finished second, clocking 52.58 seconds.

Fenton's bronze opens Antigua and Barbuda's medal tally at the regional athletics championships, with competition set to continue over the coming days.
